Stress corrosion cracking

By MRC Nagarajan

The other day I was reading a book on corrosion, in which I found this poem.

Stress Corrosion
The image of stress corrosion I see,
Is that of a huge unwanted tree.
Against whose trunk we chop and chop,
But which out grows the chips that drop,
And from each gash made on its bark
A new branch grows to make more dark.
The shade of ignorance around its base
Where scientists toil with puzzled faces.
— SP Rideout (1967)

I do not know about the quality of poem, but the content impressed me. Even to day we are not aware of the full extent this form of corrosion affecting our material world. Just like the type and number of allergens in nature which affects us. Just see how the basic thin document NACE MR0175 has grown into ISO 15156! There is cracking possible with stress, without stress, there is hydrogen induced cracking, chlorine induced cracking, hydrogen sulphide induced cracking, cracking of nickel base alloys in boiler condensate water, dry ammonia causing cracking on carbon steel, ammonia cracking brass material in stressed condition, and the mercury compounds just accelerating this aspect, common salt cracking stainless steel, etc., etc.

There are several theories what might be causing the cracking of material in various environments, how some prevents its and how some accelerates it. But yet they stop at some point.

Should we start a chain correspondence to collect what we have seen or learnt in course of our service on this colourful subject?

Course on Strength and Fatigue of Tubular Structures

Course Overview: The short course will provide the participants with state-of-the-art knowledge on tubular structures. Tubular hollow sections are increasingly used in offshore structures, large-span roofs and multi-storey buildings due to their excellent properties and the associated advances in fabrication technology. The course will cover a wide range of topics, including guidance for strength and fatigue design for various types of connections.
